impee's Travel

Below are brief and still uncomplete accounts / verdicts of each country that I have visited. Some are based upon particular cities and some are general, but you know the saying - "the first impression is the last impression". Hopefully in a few years I will run out of web space trying to fill this page in, but I know that will only happen if I give up work and become a tourist guide :)

EU

  Europe Trip (Honey moon) click
All explained on the linked page.

+ve - Chance to experience many different cultures
-ve - you get fed up of eating out

Verdict -
10/10

Austria

Austria
Out of the whole drive through Europe on our Honeymoon my verdict was that Austria has the best roads & motorways + you only need to buy a Vignette and you can drive on any toll road through out Austria and it only costs a couple of pounds. I drove through the whole of Austria from the Western to Eastern border just to find out when I was exiting the border that I was meant to buy a Vignette. Lucky no one noticed, however I did then buy one for the drive back. Southern Austria appears to be the most beautiful country through which we drove (on the way to Venice). The Alps mountain range in the south was breathtaking.

+ve - Beautiful scenery &  architecture, best European roads & motorways, cheap toll roads
-ve - Vienna very busy

Verdict - 8/10

Belgium

Belgium
I have been twice to Brussels twice and thrice to Brugges. Once with Vierka and once secretly to buy her engagement ring as Belgium has the best diamonds in the world (cut in Antwerp), and the tastiest Chocolate. I found Brussels to be a nice place, beautiful architecture and very friendly people. A local beer called Duvel (Devil) is one to definitely try. One thing, I found the tube network to be complex to understand and takes a while to understand. Brugges was a fairy tale town, very beautiful and old and I do recommend it.

+ve - Beautiful architecture, friendly people, cheap
-ve - complex underground system

Verdict - 8/10

Czech Republic

Czech Republic
Prague is ok for a one day visit. Infact I experienced it all in 4 hours as it is tiny. Its a rip off for tourists as we paid £40 for lunch and it was stale, also most of the people there are very rude. If you get the chance to drive out of Prague there are very nice natural & historic places that can be seen.

+ve - Beautiful architecture, cheap
-ve - Prague too small, too many tourists, rude locals

Verdict - 5/10

France

France
Paris to me is dirty version of London but with the positive of having many more beautiful tourist attractions of which in particular the Eiffel Tower & the Notre Damn cathedral are on top of the list. I've been to Paris on holiday once and driven through it by mistake at peak time another (on the way back from our honey moon while trying to get to the port of Calais to get back to London - it took me over 2hrs to get through Paris as there is no motorway to avoid central Paris) Southern France is very beautiful, where we spent 5 days in Nice itself. Nice airport was amazing at its runway ends where the sea begins. France has ridiculous toll road charges and fule prices, the highest I paid for one toll motorway was about £24 on the way out from Nice. The Viadcut de Millau was beautiful.

+ve - Beautiful scenery & architecture, French speaking women
-ve - Expensive toll roads, unfriendly locals, Paris expensive

Verdict - 7/10

Germany

Germany
I lived in Germany for about 3 months in Karlsruhe.  Besides that I have been there once again during our Honeymoon, obviously staying at Karlsruhe to meet some friends. On the way to Munich I thought I must take advantage of the Autobahn and my fast car, which I surely did. Its a pity that the Autobahn is only 2 lanes as mainland European drivers tend to put their indicator on and instantly pull out forcing me to slam on my brakes at 125mph!!!

+ve - Beautiful scenery, Friendly people, most locals speak English
-ve - The Autobahn is only 2 lanes

Verdict - 8/10

Italy

Italy
I visited Venice, Florence & Pisa. Venice was a dream! Florence was nice and had very narrow old streets and markets (like they show in films).  Pisa was a very tiny town and the only thing there was the the leaning tower of Pisa which was amazing. My verdict on Italian food is thumbs down, however this could be entirely due to the fact that we ate at touristy places. Italy has crazy toll road charges too, I spent about £60 on only a couple of toll roads!

+ve - Beautiful architecture
-ve - Expensive toll roads, food nothing great

Verdict - 8/10

Monaco

Monaco
If you've come from London then Monaco is a waste of time. I would put the hype about Monaco down to people visiting it from far less developed countries. Due to this we barely spent 2 hours there and that too most of it in the Monte Carlo Casino where Vierka won some money, but we took the chips home for souvenirs.

+ve - You can show off about going there
-ve - everything

Verdict - 4/10

Pakistan

Pakistan
I spent about 12 years living in Islamabad (the Capital) which is a beautiful planned city. Pakistan is a nice place in terms natural beauty and social life but Pakistan is a seriously corrupt place, which is perfect if you have money :) I and Vierka visited there in 2004 for my friends wedding. The northern parts close to the Himalayas and K2 are beautiful.

+ve - Beautiful scenery, social life
-ve - corrupt

Verdict - 6/10

Poland

Poland
I drove across the border to do some Polish food shopping where unfortunately  they stamped my *brand new* passport! On another occasion I took a white water raft ride down a river that passed through a beautiful route between the 3 crown mountains, this terminated in Poland.

+ve - Beautiful scenery
-ve -

Verdict -
Not seen enough to judge

Spain

Spain
I drove through the Pyrenees mountains across the border from France all the way down till Gibraltar. Spain is beautiful, especially the beaches, the food is tasty, the people are relaxed and happy and best of all the climate was clear sunny skies. The Toll motor ways were pretty good too, but again a little expensive. It has many historicsites and buildings to visit and also provides a modern touch e.g. Valencia.

+ve - Beautiful scenery, beaches, food, relaxed atmosphere and climate
-ve - The whole country seems to be slightly run down, needs a mass clean up

Verdict - 9/10

Slovak Republic

Slovakia
As my wife is from Slovakia I have been there many many times, infact some times twice a year. Slovakia is a natural un touched country with over 50 Castles / Ruins, Caves, Parks, Spas, Minerals, Hills, Mountains, numerous Ski resorts (the largest in Central Eastern Europe), Heritage sites, Rivers etc. Bratislava (the Capital) to me is a mini London, lots of money and a decent clean place. I have been to most big cities though out Slovakia such as Kosice, Presov, Bratislava, etc.

+ve - Beautiful scenery & architecture, very cheap, friendly locals
-ve - lacks a complete coast to coast motorway

Verdict - 8/10

Sweden

Sweden
Stockholm is one amazing city. Its made up of over 100 islands linked by bridges. I also found that there are not many tourists there which is always a plus. The scenery & architecture was beautiful. One thing I can tell you is that the myth about blonde Swedish girls is not true as I don't recall seeing even a single one in the week I spent there. A restaurant/bar/club to definitely visit is the Cafe' Opera.

+ve - Beautiful scenery & architecture, friendly people
-ve - London Prices

Verdict - 8/10

USA

USA
I visited Washington DC & Springfield. I found if you don't have a car - your doomed, also there is no point being polite as that is not a word in their dictionary.

+ve - Cheap
-ve - Bad public transport, impolite locals

Verdict - 4/10
